ALICE MOSS
I live in the Detroit Metro area, spending a lot of time in Northern Michigan and around the Great Lakes. I went to Baldwin Wallace College for Art and Theatre, graduating with a degree in Art.
After art school, I began working in several professional theatres, painting sets and creating props. I continued to create my own artwork as I joined the Michigan Opera costume shop, where I built, maintained, and managed costumes for almost 20 years. That time spent influenced my work, as I continue to explore painting and mixed media, often incorporating fabrics or scrap industrial metal, as well as copper and wood, in my work.
The unique textures and palette of Northern Michigan, with a little industrial Detroit thrown in, continues to inspire my work.
Art is a big part of my life. As a young girl, I was always painting and making things with my father, who was a painter and ceramicist. From noodle sculptures and plaster castings to drawings and paintings, there was always a project going.
I continually collect stones, driftwood, rusty metal, and all manner of things, figuring out what story they tell and how to incorporate them in my artwork.
Many of my paintings contain ground malachite and copper, as well as copper foil, wire, and mesh. Several pieces have rusted metal, industrial pieces, or gold leaf. I work with fabrics and texture, with color playing an important role in creating the mood or look of an abstract landscape.
The possibilities are endless, and one thing leads to another; I love coming up with new combinations and different solutions to a vision.
